Before the advent of the coloring book craze for adults in 2015, Shelley had taken her expert illustration skills and well-respected sense of color a few steps further. She had immersed herself in creating advanced Zentangle imagery. (Zentangle is the practice of creating beautiful images from repetitive patterns. It is a fascinating art form that is both fun and relaxing, increases focus and creativity, and provides artistic satisfaction and an increased sense of personal well being.)
Ready for another challenge, Shelley then started creating her own intricately detailed, picturing whimsical florals which she hand colored and shaded, making them appear to be expert water watercolor paintings. It was only a matter of time before she created a kaleidoscope from such art, and the world is better for it! She introduced this unique "MaMaDoodle" kaleidoscope style at the 2016 convention of the Brewster Kaleidoscope Society, an international group of kaleidoscope artists, collectors and retailers. Like the Knapps' popular wooden kaleidoscopes, this style features two interior colorways--Jewel ("#1") and Bright ("#2"), referring to Shelley's signature flame-worked pieces of Italian glass in the oil cells but now reserving a distinct piece of her art for the bodies.
This is a non-turning, 2-mirror style that is perfectly safe around children, and Shelley should know. She's often surrounded by her pack of adorable little blond grandchildren! Randy has been very well respected for decades among kaleidoscope collectors for his expert woodworking present in the rest of their kaleidoscope line. On these MaMaDoodle styles, one can appreciate his custom handcrafted acrylic eyepieces in a fanciful spiral design.
Truly a wonderful gift for families with kids of all ages, this kaleidoscope measures 7-1/2" tall x 2-1/2" in diameter (at the base). Each one is signed and dated by Shelley.
